HAPPY NEW YEAR! Thank goodness 2016 is over, surely now that we have passed that arbitrary point in the orbit around our Sun things will finally start looking up, right?
Who knows. If the last year has taught me anything, it’s that the universe tends towards chaos and it will throw complete nonsense at you just when you think you’re making sense of the whole thing.
There were a lot of things that everyone despaired over last year; all those talented celebrities dying at surprisingly young ages, Brexit, Trump, terrorist attacks, people generally being a bit terrible. The world felt like a less friendly and warm and fuzzy place. It didn’t even feel that warm and fuzzy to begin with!
But the fact is that bad news is always going to get reported more, people are always going to focus on the negatives. It’s what we do. Maybe it’s an evolutionary thing so we can learn from mistakes or something, but we’re good at forgetting about the good things. So maybe this year I will work harder to find some good news in the swirl of chaos that is our world, because otherwise it can just feel like far too much.
ITV did a beautiful job of showing all of the Harry Potter’s over Christmas. While I was watching the Goblet of Fire and doing my usual blubbing over Dumbledore’s speech at the end, part of it stood out.
“Now the pain we all feel at this dreadful loss reminds me, and, reminds us, that though we may come from different countries and speak in different tongues, our hearts beat as one. In light of the recent events, the bonds of friendship made this year will be more important than ever.”
And then I just marvelled at how wise Dumbledore was and that Harry Potter can make anything feel just a little bit better and less bleak. I bet there are other things out that can do that too, and this year I will make much more of an effort to notice them.
